Spring 2018 Serpent Sculpture Collection:
Artist Statement
For the first half of the semester, I couldn’t throw a pot successfully. I was on the brink of giving up all hope and was about to quit. I got lost on the internet one day and came across “snake pots”, I was amazed by the detail and how realistic some looked. Snakes, in my opinion, are one of the marvelous creatures. I wanted to challenge myself by sculpting for my show and my idea became to sculpt onto wheel threw pieces, which meant I first had to successfully throw a couple pots. The process for sculpting is quite tedious but it starts with making coils through the extruder. Then taking those coils and scoring and slipping them to the pots to create the snake's shape. The final step was to add texture to bring out the realism in my snakes. I spent a lot of time focusing on the details and making sure my craftsmanship was at its best. This process, as a whole, took weeks, one piece could take up to three days to perfect, but in the end, hard work pays off. Next year at college I hope to take an art class to continue my creative flow.
